How Mixing Ratios Work

Mixing ratios are counted in parts, and the parts include everything in the container.

Total parts first

A 4:1 mix is five parts, not four. Once you know the batch size, one part is the batch divided by five, and each component is that value multiplied by its number of parts.

Working from a component

You often know how much of one component you have rather than the batch size. Divide that amount by its number of parts to get the value of one part, then rebuild the rest of the mix from it.

Volume is not weight

A ratio measured by volume and the same ratio measured by weight only agree when the components have the same density. Converting between the two requires a density figure that a ratio alone does not carry.

Follow the mixing instructions for the specific product you are using. SnapRatios calculates the proportions only — it makes no judgement about whether a mixture is safe or suitable.
