1:10 is not always 1 in 10
Read as product to diluent, 1:10 means one part product plus ten parts diluent — eleven total parts, so a 1,100 ml batch needs 100 ml of product. Read as “one part in ten”, the ten is the total, so the same batch needs 110 ml. Choosing the wrong reading changes the concentration by roughly ten percent.
